2-in-1 IdeaPad MIIX 320 = Windows Touch Tablet + Keyboard Laptop
An ideal-sized detachable 2-in-1 for kids (or adults with small hands), the Lenovo Miix 320 offers better battery life than similarly priced PCs, as well as decent performance, a vivid display and solid audio. As you might expect from a 10.1-inch laptop, this machine’s keyboard is fairly cramped. But once you get past that — and younger users may not even notice it — the Miix 320 a very good budget machine.
The Miix 320 is a solid budget 2-in-1 that’s great for kids with lots of battery life, but the keyboard is best for small fingers.

- Long battery life.
- Touch screen.
- USB-C port.
- microSD card reader.
- Sturdy magnetic connector.
- Real laptop-like feel when paired with keyboard.
At first glance, the keyboard and tablet of the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 320 are so well-integrated that you might not even know that this is a detachable 2-in-1. A basic Windows 10 laptop, it can be transformed into a 10-inch tablet by removing its magnetically attached keyboard. As is the case with its budget-price ilk, it’s best suited for light-duty tasks as opposed to media creation or gaming, either for a relatively undemanding user or for someone looking for a second computer for the road. Still, you get a USB-C port and more than 13 hours of battery life making it an Editors’ Choice for convertible laptops.
The 320 runs Windows 10 Home. Under the hood on our review unit, there’s a 1.44GHz Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor, integrated Intel HD Graphics, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of eMMC flash storage on board. (The $199 base model has half the storage and memory.) The left and right side of the keyboard each have a USB 2.0 port. On the left side (when attached to the keyboard) of the tablet are the power socket, an on-off button, and a volume-control rocker. Although you can also control the volume from the microphone icon in your tray or from the keyboard when it’s attached, the physical volume control is a nice convenience, particularly when you’re using the 320 in tablet mode.
On the right side, there is a tiny hole for the built-in microphone, a headphone socket, a mini HDMI port, and, most important, a USB-C port. (Of the systems mentioned here, the HP Pavilion x2 is the only other one to include this connector.) Along the tablet edge that connects to the hinge, and hidden from view when the 320 is in laptop mode, is a microSD card slot.
The Miix 320 has two cameras, a 2-megapixel front-facing selfie camera and a 5MP rear camera for conventional shooting. Unsurprising considering its 10-inch screen, the keyboard is a little more compressed than your typical 13-inch laptop, with slightly less space between the chiclet-style keys. The letter keys are full-size and run almost to the edge of the laptop’s frame, making as full use as possible of the 9.8-inch width. Although my typing experience wasn’t quite as comfortable as it usually is on a larger keyboard, I quickly got used to it. The touchpad is responsive, and its left- and right-click zones at the bottom are set to respond to a comfortable pressure.
A Laptop for Light-Duty Tasks
The combination of the Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor and Intel integrated graphics produced benchmark scores typical of the 320’s ilk, making it best for emails, web surfing, business documents, and media consumption. In PCMark 8 Work Conventional, which measures overall system performance in a variety of tasks, the 320 scored 1,451 points, at the low end of an extremely narrow range of scores (up to 1,478). Its scores in multimedia tests were about what I would expect. It narrowly earned the best score (106) in CineBench R15, which measures hardware and processing performance, and had an intermediate score in the Handbrake video encoding test. It took more than 17 minutes to complete our Photoshop test, but so did the rest of our comparison systems. You won’t be doing video production with it, or using it in your photo studio, but at least it can run Photoshop, which some budget laptops are unable to do.
A Winner on Value and Features
Detachable hybrids are the Transformers of the computer world, at home as either a tablet or a laptop, as needed. For high-end detachable hybrids, performance is king and price is no object. Budget detachables are at the other end of the spectrum, where low price and good user experience are paramount, and a slightly better feature set can make a big difference.
During testing, my experience with the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 320 was smooth and enjoyable, despite its small keyboard. A sturdy feel and good magnetic connection between keyboard and tablet add to its appeal. It is substantially improved from last year’s Miix 310, with more memory and storage, plus the addition of a USB-C port. The 320’s USB-C port. USB-C allows you to connect, through an adapter, with multiple sources at once including HDMI, VGA, DisplayPort, USB 2.0 and 3.0, and even Ethernet. That along with its lower price are enough to make the Miix 320 our new Editors’ Choice budget detachable hybrid tablets.
